Broadway Hotel: Neglected Heritage Landmark Up for Restoration

A major restoration is underway for the heritage-listed Broadway Hotel along Logan Road in Woolloongabba and its owners plan to rebuild the iconic building as the Breakfast Creek Hotel of the southeast side.

Broadway Projects Pty Ltd bought the neglected property from Malcolm Nyst in 2021. The site has existing approved plans to demolish the WWII bomb shelter, alongside some of the rear extensions.

The new owners hired Carbone Developments to be involved with the restoration under the guidance of heritage architect Ivan McDonald. Carbone Developments has many projects involving heritage builds.

A spokesperson for the company said that the demolition process will be painstaking as they have to remove the concrete by hand to preserve the other structure and ensure it won’t be knocked down.

Though some locals opposed the removal of the WWII bomb shelter due to its history, Carbone Developments said they had many positive meetings with the Department of Environment and Science to discuss the restoration.

The company’s long-term plans for the Broadway Hotel include building a 20-storey residential site next to the pub. However, the focus for the moment is to restore the pub, which could take more than a year.

A development application for the residential project has yet to be lodged as the new owners still have to gauge how the venue, once wholly restored, will click with the community.

Broadway Hotel was entered into the Queensland Heritage Register in 1992. Two major fires damaged the three-storey octagonal building, which become a place for vandals after years of neglect.

The tower will feature a curvaceous form with a ground-level link that will connect Central Square to the Secret Garden.

Stage 7 is further subdivided into Stage 7a – comprising the podium, residential tower, and part of the ‘Secret Garden’ – and 7b – comprising the rest of the public garden.  A total of 188 car parking spaces will be provided within the basement level currently being constructed under Stage 4.

“The proposed development has been design-led, using a first principles design approach to ensure that the development responds to and takes advantage of the unique characteristics of the site, responds to orientation and climate, provides a subtropical design response and provides a building that is unique in its setting, delivering high quality design for the benefit of both future residents as well as the broader community,” the Urbis town planning report said.

Comic Empire Logan Road to Close Indefinitely After Fire Damage

Fire broke out at Comic Empire, a popular rare comic store on Logan Road, a few hours before it was set to open for its first day of business this year, leaving considerable damage to property and its extensive comics and games library. Tony Nasser, store manager, has announced a temporary shutdown.

Comic Empire, will still need time to assess the extent of the damage. Fortunately, no one was injured from the fire and the damage did not spread to the other commercial establishments in the building as firefighters were able to contain the blaze by 12:30 a.m.

According to Mr Nasser, some pretty rare and valuable items, such as the first appearance comics of characters like Wolverine and Venom, were among those that burned. Most of Comic Empire’s stocks were set in the middle of the store. Per reports, investigators determined that this was where the fire broke out.

“We understand that there are going to be lots of questions and we will answer what we can when we are able,” Tony wrote in his Facebook message.

“We thank you for your understanding during this trying time.”

Mr Nasser said that the fire investigators are sure that the fire was accidental. However, further investigations will be underway this week to confirm how the fire started.

Comic Empire has been in operation for three years and Mr Nasser has been with the comic industry for over two decades. The store has insurance but Mr Nasser admitted this incident is not a great start to 2020.

Following the news, expression of support and sympathy poured for Mr Nasser and Comic Empire on social media.

“Tony’s such a great supporter of our local community, generously donating prizes to schools and patiently waiting while children (and adults!) spend hours checking out his memorabilia and comics,” Sally Dillon of Greens for Coorparoo said.

“The fire has caused extended damage to the shop and the merchandise — Tony has lost thousands of dollars worth of rare comics. All the best Tony over the coming days. Please let us know if the community can give you a hand in any way.”
