Residents of Greenslopes were shaken yesterday, 26 February 2024, as news broke of a body found inside a burnt-out car near the Annerley Football Club.
The car was reported on fire in Pear St, Greenslopes, just after 2am. The scene is next to the Thompson Estate Reserve and Annerley Football Club.
Authorities have not yet determined whether foul play was involved, sparking concerns within the community about the safety of their neighbourhood.
Karla Vaughan, a resident of the area, described her shock when police knocked on her door in the early hours of the morning to inform her of the grim discovery.
“I heard loud explosions. I called (firefighters) and the police,” Vaughan said.
“When I saw a lot of flames I was afraid the fuel tank would explode.
“But the fire crews were here in about five minutes, I could see them coming along Ridge St.”
The car park, where the vehicle was found, is usually a peaceful spot. However, a groundsman working for the adjacent football clubs has reported finding needles in the area in the past. This has raised concerns among the residents.
Another resident, who wished to remain anonymous, reported seeing a significant police presence and forensic officers diligently working at the scene.
“I walk my dog there regularly and have noticed some suspicious vehicles parked there over the last few months,’’ they said.
A crime scene was declared shortly after the discovery of the deceased person inside the vehicle.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any relevant information to authorities through Policelink on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
