A familiar community institution has found a new home in Greenslopes, with the former Coorparoo RSL & Community Club now trading as Parkside Community & Services Club.

The club has relocated to the former Greenslopes Bowls Club site on Ridge Street, just five minutes from its original Coorparoo location, marking the end of a multi-year search for a permanent base following the sale of its previous property.

The journey to this new chapter began in 2021 when the club sold its Coorparoo land. The sale was made to pay down debt and secure funds for the club’s future relocation.

What followed was an extensive search for a suitable location. After successful negotiations with Brisbane’s local officials, the club secured a lease for the former bowls club site and undertook a major refurbishment.

The club invested approximately $5 million in the relocation and refurbishment. Working with design firm Paynters, the club has redeveloped the venue with modern facilities. The site retains two bowling greens, each serving distinct purposes. One green is maintained for social use and barefoot bowls. The second is a multi-purpose green used for commemorative services to community events and activities.

The venue features the Greenhouse Bistro and an outdoor covered terrace. Members and guests can also enjoy a cafe, bar, lounge area, and function spaces. Gaming facilities and expanded parking are also available.

The venue also houses an RSL office and memorial displays to honour servicemen and women. While the legal entity remains unchanged, the name Parkside Community & Services Club reflects the club’s evolution and its new environment.

The community element acknowledges the club’s role as a social hub, whilst the services component maintains the connection to the RSL charter and veteran support that defines the organisation’s core mission.

The choice of Parkside itself references the venue’s location adjacent to parklands, soccer fields, and a sporting precinct. The name reflects the club’s connection to its new neighbourhood in Greenslopes.

The local response has exceeded expectations, with early patronage figures suggesting strong community support for the new venue. First-month attendance reportedly reached three times the club’s initial forecasts.

The redevelopment ensures the continuation of a club with roots in Brisbane’s inner south, whilst creating a modern venue designed to serve both veterans and the broader Greenslopes community.

About Coorparoo RSL

Established in 1935 when it received its RSL Charter on 19 August, the Coorparoo and District RSL Sub-Branch Inc marked its 85th anniversary in 2020. The organisation relocated from its original home at the Coorparoo School of Arts and Memorial Hall to Holdsworth Street in the early 1960s, having occupied the Memorial Hall and RSL Sub Branch building since 1956.

Over nearly nine decades, the Sub Branch has adapted to serve changing community needs by operating as a community club. Today, it boasts over 200 members alongside more than 2,000 social members, with membership numbers rising rapidly since Parkside’s opening.

The legal entity — the Coorparoo RSL sub-branch and its RSL charter — remains the same organisation supporting veterans and community programs. The operating “club name” and venue branding have changed to Parkside Community & Services Club to reflect the new location and facilities while continuing community and veteran services.

Parkside Community & Services Club is located at 131 Ridge Street, Greenslopes.

Parkside Community Club Nears Opening, Bringing a Fresh Chapter to Greenslopes

Greenslopes residents are preparing for the opening of the new Parkside Community & Services Club, set to begin operations in early December 2025. The transformation of the old Greenslopes Bowls Club at 131 Ridge Street is being carried out as part of the Coorparoo RSL & Community Club’s relocation to the suburb.

The venue, long familiar to locals, is being rebuilt as a contemporary community space designed to serve Greenslopes’ growing neighbourhood.

On 5 October 2025, the club hosted a community morning that drew families and residents. The free event featured barista coffee, face painting, and a petting zoo for children. It offered locals a chance to visit the new site, meet members of the Parkside team, and hear about the club’s upcoming programs, membership options, and job opportunities.

A Careful Restoration of a Local Landmark

Plans outlined a bistro, casual bar, modern café, and event spaces. Construction work has been underway through winter and spring to deliver a venue that combines contemporary facilities with familiar community character.

What was once the old front bar is being converted into a café, and the club has teased a partnership with a local coffee roaster. The design includes open dining areas, landscaped greens, and a shaded alfresco deck.

Barefoot bowls will remain a feature, maintaining a link to the club’s bowling heritage. Multiple function rooms are planned to support private and community events such as family gatherings, local group meetings, and RSL activities.

Preparing for Launch

In September, the club announced key kitchen appointments, naming Executive Chef Brenton Crook alongside Head Chef Daryl Taylor. The appointments mark a focus on dining quality, with the kitchen expected to feature seasonal menus once operations begin.

Around 30 new positions will be created across hospitality and support roles, contributing to local employment opportunities in Greenslopes.

Residents can register on the official website for updates about the opening, membership, and upcoming events. Social media channels have also been sharing behind-the-scenes updates from the renovation and recruitment process.

Community and Connection

The relocation of Coorparoo RSL to Greenslopes brings with it a continuation of the RSL’s commitment to supporting veterans and families. Plans include a dedicated welfare office, as well as programs and community grants to benefit local organisations.

Beyond its physical redesign, the project represents an investment in the social fabric of the area. The Parkside Community & Services Club aims to create a space where long-time locals and newcomers can participate in the same neighbourhood activities that once made the old bowls club a central part of Greenslopes life.

Coorparoo RSL’s Revamp of Greenslopes Bowls Club Underway

Construction is set to begin at the former Greenslopes Bowls Club site as Coorparoo RSL embarks on a major refurbishment to revitalise the long-closed community venue. The redevelopment aims to restore the site as a family-friendly space featuring a restaurant, live music, and social bowling greens.

Once a thriving hub for live music, community events, and social bowls, the Greenslopes Bowls Club at 131 Ridge Street officially closed in late 2022. In response to concerns over the loss of vital community spaces in the area, BCC opened the site for tender in 2023, seeking a non-profit organisation capable of restoring and managing the venue.

Coorparoo RSL and Community Club was chosen as the preferred leaseholder and, in September 2023, secured a 10-year lease agreement with BCC. The agreement also includes an option to extend the lease after three years.

The Redevelopment Plan and Timeline

Coorparoo RSL is investing $3.5 million into the site’s refurbishment, partnering with Paynters, a hospitality design and construction firm, to deliver the transformation.

The project will include:

  • A bistro, bar, and café to cater to families and visitors.
  • Two bowling greens, one dedicated to social bowls and the other as a community green space.
  • An outdoor covered deck for dining and entertainment.
  • Expanded parking facilities to accommodate visitors.
  • Gaming facilities as part of the club’s operations.
  • A welfare office to support veterans, aligned with RSL Queensland’s mission.

The staged refurbishment timeline is as follows:

  • February 2025 – Worksite establishment.
  • March 2025 – Removal of building materials.
  • April 2025 – Commencement of the refurbishment fit-out.
  • Second half of 2025 – Expected project completion and relocation of Coorparoo RSL operations to the site.

Community Sentiment and Future Impact

The project has received strong support from Coorparoo RSL members and the wider Greenslopes community. Club president Mervyn Cuylenburg expressed optimism, stating that the redevelopment would restore a key social space while securing the club’s long-term future.

BCC’s decision to lease the site to Coorparoo RSL has also reassured residents concerned about the land being sold for private development. Many locals have welcomed plans to reintroduce live music, dining, and recreational activities to the area.

Next Steps

Coorparoo RSL has assured members and residents that the transition will be smooth, with its current Coorparoo site remaining operational until the new Greenslopes venue is ready. Regular updates on the refurbishment process will be shared via official club communications and a dedicated email address (greenslopes@coorparoorsl.com.au).

As construction begins, the club has urged the community to remain patient during the initial stages, with some noise expected during normal building hours.

With work now underway, the Greenslopes community looks forward to welcoming back a beloved venue, set to offer a fresh mix of entertainment, dining, and social engagement by late 2025.

Coorparoo RSL to Put Pokies at Former Greenslopes Bowls Club

Did you know that Coorparoo RSL has secured approval to install pokies at the former Greenslopes Bowls Club site?

Coorparoo RSL plans to relocate its operations to the rundown bowls venue after selling its home of 60 years in Coorparoo in 2021.

Coorparoo RSL reportedly considered installing up to 120 machines at Greenslopes, but the club’s CEO Chris Satori said there are no plans to increase beyond the approved 50 machines. He stated that would require an extensive regulatory and community consultation process that the RSL does not intend to undertake.

The RSL expects to spend $3.5 million renovating and refitting the Greenslopes site. Some Coorparoo RSL members expressed disappointment that the club is moving out of the suburb after 60 years. They felt there should have been an in-person vote rather than a postal vote, which allegedly attracted 80 responses in support of the Greenslopes relocation.

Those opposed to the project allege that Greenslopes residents were not properly consulted about the use of the former public bowling greens site and that the venue should be used for community benefit like arts, music and childcare rather than pokies.

A proposal has been floated, seeking to ban pokies at Council-owned venues in the future and transforming those venues into hubs for arts, music and community activities.

“The last thing the community needs is more pokies. Australians lose approximately $25 billion to gambling every year, including $11 billion from pokies in pubs, clubs and venues other than casinos,” said Member for Griffith Max Chandler-Mather.

“Exploitative pokie machines don’t enrich our community spaces, they are expertly designed for addiction and have already destroyed thousands of Australian lives. And when people live close to pokies venues, they are more likely to experience serious financial and mental health consequences,” he said.

However, Cr Fiona Cunningham said most local residents support the RSL’s renovation plans and continuing bowling and live music activities.

Mr Satori said the club undertook an exhaustive search for a new venue before recommending the former Greenslopes Bowls Club. He said the relocation will allow the RSL to continue supporting veterans and local community groups.
