Calls To Implement FOGO Service In Stones Corner, Rest Of Brisbane Renewed

With thousands of Brisbane residents, including Stones Corner locals, participating in the food waste recycling pilot, calls have been renewed to fully implement the Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) service in the city.

In Australia, around 70 councils are already implementing FOGO, allowing residents to easily dispose of a large variety of organic waste. It’s similar to recycling, but rather than repurposing paper and glass, it finds a new life for food scraps, garden clippings and other green waste.

Once the food and green waste have been collected, Council’s contractor will bring it to  a resource recovery centre and then to a green waste recycling partner’s facility where it will be converted into compost and then used in Brisbane by local farmers, urban growers and local businesses.

Whilst participation is only optional in most cities, local governments encourage residents to participate in the FOGO service as it has many environmental benefits.

One of the advantages of going FOGO is reducing the city’s footprint, as food waste in Brisbane currently makes up approximately 30 percent of household general waste bins.

Labor for Brisbane, which launched a petition urging Council to adopt FOGO, highlighted some other benefits, such as creating thousands of jobs (three times as many jobs as traditional landfill) and creating a revenue stream that feeds back into ratepayers’ pockets, since the compost can be used on council gardens or sold to farmers and other producers.

Brisbane City Council has not yet adopted the initiative, but launched the food waste recycling pilot in March 2022, with over 6,000 households already participating.

“The pilot alone is expected to divert 2000 tonnes of food waste from landfill, and when expanded across the city it could reduce unnecessary food waste by nearly 100,000 tonnes a year,” said Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner.

A Council spokesperson added that the pilot has received a ‘very positive’ feedback, which will help inform its expansion across Brisbane.

In Stones Corner, collection routes are in the streets of Lincoln, Regina, and Zillah. For more information about the food waste recyling pilot in your area, visit Brisbane City Council’s website.

Hanlon Park Development and Transformation Now Complete

After more than a year of development and transformation, Hanlon Park, considered to be the heart of Stones Corner, has finally been completed. Residents now have a beautiful, new, public green space to enjoy.

The new green space boasts the following:

  • a meandering natural waterway to support native plants and animals
  • more than 462 new trees and 43,000 shrubs and groundcover plants
  • a nature-themed play area with a climbing tower, sand pit, water pump, swing set, balancing play features and dry creek bed to encourage imaginative play
  • public artworks along the waterway representing local flora

Hanlon Park was formerly a massive concrete drain. After a $21.5-million redevelopment, it is now one of the best parks in the city “with Norman Creek flowing through the park once again,” Ms Cunningham said.

The park will also be known for its Aboriginal name, Bur’uda, which means Oak Tree Forest. This area around Norman Creek was the source of food and culture for the Aboriginal people.

On Saturday, 23 July 2022, Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner, alongside Councillor Fiona Cunningham, will lead the official opening of Hanlon Park along 56 Junction St, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

The weekend’s event will be free for all and will begin with a  traditional custodian smoking ceremony. There will be family entertainment and information stalls in some of the areas, alongside a bake sale and BBQ.

“The opening event is a celebration inviting the local community to enjoy their new naturalised waterway, enhanced environment, recreation facilities, nature-themed play area and improved connectivity,” the Council stated.

Lady Marmalade in Stones Corner Appeals for Kindness Amidst New Rules for Unvaccinated

Restaurants, bars, and cafes across Queensland, including Lady Marmalade Cafe in Stones Corner, are appealing to customers to be kind to their staff as they implement new rules for the unvaccinated and comply with the requirements imposed by the state.

From 17 December 2021, only fully vaccinated customers may enter and dine at restaurants, bars, cafes, taverns, clubs, and function centres across Queensland. Customers who are unvaccinated could be banned from the premises or restricted to takeaway services only. The following day, Queensland officials also reactivated the face mask requirement due to the highly transmissible Omicron COVID-19 variant.

Businesses that will not implement the new rules may be fined thousands of dollars whilst the operators could face up to six months in prison. So, those working in the hospitality industry are feeling nervous as they expect encounters with customers who might be upset by the mandate.

Some hospitality venue operators said that they are worried about their staff who could be subjected to harassment or abuse. Lady Marmalade Cafe’s owners took to social media to remind its customers and followers that the rules against the unvaccinated did not come from their system.

“Be kind to our staff, don’t hate on us if you hate the mandate,” they appealed.

However, the mandate also stated that business owners and their staff aren’t expected to police their customers.

“If customers are refusing to comply and become aggressive, phone the police,” the rules stated.

Stage 2 Completed for Hanlon Park Revitalisation in Stones Corner

The second stage of the Hanlon Park development in Stones Corner is done and locals may now enjoy the public park. Work on Stage 3 has also commenced with a target opening sometime in early 2022.

Cr Fiona Cunningham led the opening of Hanlon Park Stage 2 on 4 Oct 2021 along with members of the N4C Norman Creek Catchment Coordinating Committee, the families and kids of Stones Corner Kindergarten, and some residents.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner graced the opening as well and said that this green space is “quickly becoming Brisbane’s best kept secret.”

The Hanlon Park revitalisation between Cornwall Street and O’Keefe Street in Stones Corner was included in the Norman Creek 2012-2031 Master Plan. The project, which started in mid-2020, was  designed to transform a 100-year-old concrete drain into “a thriving community greenspace with a natural waterway, adventure playground, shared pathways and public art.”

“Our revitalisation of this community greenspace is quickly taking shape, with a new nature themed playground and, for the first time in about 100 years, Norman Creek is flowing through the park once again,” Mr Schrinner said.

Meanwhile, Stage 3 of Hanlon Park will run along O’Keefe Street, which will include more vegetation, shaded areas, pathways, and additional facilities. It will set the groundwork for the Brisbane Metro’s construction beginning 2022, which will include an underpass over Gladys Street.

Stones Corner Due For a Daring Comeback This 2021

After much neglect and a series of closures pre-pandemic, Stones Corner is set to make a daring comeback in 2021. With six projects set to revitalise the precinct, it’s only a matter of time until this high street is restored to its former glory.

Sprucing Up Penney’s Building, 357 Logan Rd

The first of these projects is the restoration of Penney’s Building, one of the precinct’s chief landmarks. Having been around since 1938, the building at 357 Logan Rd has been left in a state of disrepair despite its iconic and easily-recognisable art deco exterior. Plans are being drawn by the DeMartini Fletcher group to refurbish it with wooden trusses, exposed brick, higher ceilings, and indoor foliage; all of which will give the interior a fresher look.

Bringing in the Latest Tenants to Bower Lane

Bower Lane, 433 Logan Rd is also due for some upgrades, with seven new tenancies that range from the chic coffee shop Buenos Dias Con Café, all the way to the yet-to-be-opened Greenslopes branch of Brooklyn Depot — a renowned burger bar hailing from South Bank.  With new establishments packed with personality, Bower Lane aspires to catch the eyes of many would-be regulars.

New Clinics, Dentists, and Doctors at 416 Logan Rd

One of the more extensive projects is the overhaul of 416 Logan Rd, which is scheduled to be fully renovated in March. Tenants from the health industry such as dentists and doctors are planning to set up clinics within the building, supplying Greenslope locals with some easily-accessible medical expertise.

Beautician’s Hub at Freedom Suites

The fourth Stones Corner project is Freedom Suites, 392 Logan Rd. A powerhouse in the hair and beauty industry, this building now serves as a hub for freelance hairdressers and beauty specialists to set up shop, and given how many customers Freedom Suites attracts, businesses close by also prosper as a result of the influx of visitors.

Cello Apartments

Plans have also been drawn for the Cello Apartments situated in the corner between Cleveland and Flora streets. With an enticing residential area in a prime location surrounded by shops, restaurants and bars, hundreds of people can move in and be proud to call Stone Corners their home.

New Mixed-Use Residential Area at 66 Cleveland

The final project lined up for the revitalization of Stones Corner is Montague Developments’ plan to create a mixed-use residential tower in 66 Cleveland, complete with residential floors, an outdoor kitchen, coffee shops and restaurants, as well as an infinity pool. Given its proximity to various outlets and facilities as well as the Brisbane CBD, Stones Corner has the potential to become one of the busiest precincts in the Queensland area.

Sky Garden: Build-To-Rent 10-Storey Tower Proposed at Stones Corner

A development proposal for a build-to-rent 10-storey mixed use residential tower at 34 Stones Corner, Greenslopes, has been lodged with the Council. Called Sky Garden, this project envisions a “high-quality boutique offering” where residents could have short or long-term rental arrangements.

Mewing Planning Consultants filed the development application (DA A005625473) just before Christmas and it’s currently undergoing an assessment with the Council.

Sky Garden will be located near the Stones Corner Busway station, next to a few retail and office buildings. If completed, the residential sections will have 56 units and a communal rooftop recreation space, whilst the ground floor will be open for retail tenancy.

The property will adopt a rarely applied concept in Queensland: build-to-rent. This means that the building’s owner, Propertyprojects Q, will only rent out the dwellings instead of building the units to sell.

The concept implies that rental rates will be below average for a Stones corner site. According to Mewing Planning Consultants, the building’s planned design will help reduce maintenance and operating costs.

Sky Garden has been designed with “young professionals, students, key workers, visiting professionals and temporary business visitors” in mind who would be keener to take public transport or have a more environmentally sustainable way to get around Brisbane. Thus, the project has only 41 proposed parking slots for both renters and their visitors, as well as 42 bicycle slots.

Two other sites in Brisbane will adopt a build-to-rent scheme for affordable large-scale housing projects in Fortitude Valley and Newstead. These projects, announced in October 2020, will deliver a total of 750 apartments and 240 dwellings at discounted rental rates.

“Build-to-Rent will provide secure, long-term rental accommodation for tenants who don’t necessarily qualify for access to social housing, but may struggle to live close to where they work,” Minister for Education and Member for McConnel Grace Grace said.  “We will meet part of the rent cost for the affordable homes to allow a discounted market rate to be offered to eligible tenants like health and emergency service workers.”

Hanlon Park Rejuvenation Project Ready for Stage 2

Work on the Hanlon Park Rejuvenation Project in Greenslopes is moving along swiftly and will progress to the second stage soon with the completion of the nature-themed play area.

The playground off Lincoln Street is near the Stones Corner Community Kindergarten and is equipped with new sliding and climbing all abilities equipment, sand play and swings, and seating areas for groups and families.

On 11 Dec. 2020, Councillor Fiona Cunningham confirmed that the playground has re-opened with the following features:

  • Multi-level adventure play tower with slide and swing set
  • Sandpit with diggers
  • Water hand pump to activate water flow along the creek bed
  • Nature-based climbing structures
  • Shade sails
  • Paths
  • Natural rock creek beds

The open green space, however, is not yet completely ready for use for safety reasons as construction work is still taking place.

Part of the work includes ripping off a section of the concreted waterway to build a natural ecosystem.

Some 462 trees and 43,000 shrubs will also be planted all around the park to boost the greenery, which will make the Norman Creek water cleaner. Sometime in the year, the community will be asked to get involved with the planting activities.

The Hanlon Park Rejuvenation Project, which is estimated for completion by late 2021, aims to:

  • revitalise Norman Creek, which runs through the park
  • enhance the environment with more trees and natural spaces
  • increase recreational and social opportunities for residents and visitors
  • enhance connectivity and accessibility within the park and local area
  • boost local economic vibrancy with a new place to relax and enjoy

Gold Coast’s Famous Village Market Returns to Stones Corner

Did you know that Gold Coast’s favourite outdoor shopping mecca, The Village Markets, has been seasonally trading in Brisbane? If you haven’t been there, here’s your chance to experience what it’s like as it makes a comeback at Stones Corner Village in Greenslopes.

Happening on Sunday, the 29th of Sept 2019, The Village Markets in Logan Road will open from 9:00 a.m to 2:00 p.m. This is the fourth time this event would be mounted in Greenslopes since its Brisbane debut in December 2018.

By now, Gold Coast shoppers know the drill when it comes to The Village Markets since it opened more than 10 years ago in Burleigh Heads. Whilst Brissy folks used to travel more than two hours to the south to score some fashionable vintage finds and pre-loved designer labels, the quarterly event in Greenslopes has become a convenient detour.

The lineup of shops at The Village Market is a gold mine for shopaholics, fashionistas and designers. Apart from the clothes, shoppers may also snag well-crafted handcrafted pieces, ingenious upcycled furniture and unique homewares.
