Body Found in Burnt-Out Car in Greenslopes

Residents of Greenslopes were shaken yesterday, 26 February 2024, as news broke of a body found inside a burnt-out car near the Annerley Football Club.

The car was reported on fire in Pear St, Greenslopes, just after 2am. The scene is next to the Thompson Estate Reserve and Annerley Football Club.

Authorities have not yet determined whether foul play was involved, sparking concerns within the community about the safety of their neighbourhood.

Karla Vaughan, a resident of the area, described her shock when police knocked on her door in the early hours of the morning to inform her of the grim discovery.

“I heard loud explosions. I called (firefighters) and the police,” Vaughan said.

“When I saw a lot of flames I was afraid the fuel tank would explode.

“But the fire crews were here in about five minutes, I could see them coming along Ridge St.”

The car park, where the vehicle was found, is usually a peaceful spot. However, a groundsman working for the adjacent football clubs has reported finding needles in the area in the past. This has raised concerns among the residents.

Another resident, who wished to remain anonymous, reported seeing a significant police presence and forensic officers diligently working at the scene.

“I walk my dog there regularly and have noticed some suspicious vehicles parked there over the last few months,’’ they said.

A crime scene was declared shortly after the discovery of the deceased person inside the vehicle.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any relevant information to authorities through Policelink on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

New Owners Revive No More Knots in Greenslopes

No More Knots, a popular remedial massage chain in Greenslopes, is returning triumphantly after enduring a tumultuous receivership period. Elisha McDonald and her husband, Grant Jenkins, have taken the reins of No More Knots, buoyed by the steadfast support of loyal customers.

Mr Jenkins, a former strength coach to sporting luminaries like Ash Barty and John Millman, joins his wife in steering the company towards a promising future, safeguarding 60 jobs.

Despite the challenges posed by a controversial takeover by a United States company, No More Knots’ outlets in Greenslopes, Taringa and Newmarket continue to serve the community.

Whilst Ipswich Massage and Herbal Spa, also under the purview of the US-based Rayont Holdings, succumbed to closure in May last year, No More Knots stands firm, poised for resurgence.

Kourtney and Travis are believed to be staying at the luxurious Calile Hotel during their Australian visit. Though they had no security detail with them, fans readily recognised the stars and asked for selfies. The pair kindly stopped to chat and pose for photos around town.

Whilst Travis is touring Australia with Blink-182, Kourtney has been soaking up the sights in Sydney with her two youngest kids, Penelope and Reign. Her eldest son Mason opted to skip this trip.

Coorparoo RSL to Put Pokies at Former Greenslopes Bowls Club

Did you know that Coorparoo RSL has secured approval to install pokies at the former Greenslopes Bowls Club site?

Read: What Lies Ahead for Vacant Greenslopes Bowls Club Site?

Coorparoo RSL plans to relocate its operations to the rundown bowls venue after selling its home of 60 years in Coorparoo in 2021.

Coorparoo RSL reportedly considered installing up to 120 machines at Greenslopes, but the club’s CEO Chris Satori said there are no plans to increase beyond the approved 50 machines. He stated that would require an extensive regulatory and community consultation process that the RSL does not intend to undertake.

The RSL expects to spend $3.5 million renovating and refitting the Greenslopes site. Some Coorparoo RSL members expressed disappointment that the club is moving out of the suburb after 60 years. They felt there should have been an in-person vote rather than a postal vote, which allegedly attracted 80 responses in support of the Greenslopes relocation.

Those opposed to the project allege that Greenslopes residents were not properly consulted about the use of the former public bowling greens site and that the venue should be used for community benefit like arts, music and childcare rather than pokies.

A proposal has been floated, seeking to ban pokies at Council-owned venues in the future and transforming those venues into hubs for arts, music and community activities.

“The last thing the community needs is more pokies. Australians lose approximately $25 billion to gambling every year, including $11 billion from pokies in pubs, clubs and venues other than casinos,” said Member for Griffith Max Chandler-Mather.

“Exploitative pokie machines don’t enrich our community spaces, they are expertly designed for addiction and have already destroyed thousands of Australian lives. And when people live close to pokies venues, they are more likely to experience serious financial and mental health consequences,” he said.

However, Cr Fiona Cunningham said most local residents support the RSL’s renovation plans and continuing bowling and live music activities.

Mr Satori said the club undertook an exhaustive search for a new venue before recommending the former Greenslopes Bowls Club. He said the relocation will allow the RSL to continue supporting veterans and local community groups.

New Mammography Technology Transforms Patient Experience at Princess Alexandra Hospital

Princess Alexandra Hospital recently unveiled new state-of-the-art mammography technology, including Australia’s first sensory suite, to enhance the patient experience and improve breast imaging.

Read: Veloway 1 Upgrade Expected to be Completed Before 2023 Ends

The sensory suite utilises mood lighting, lavender scented walls, and sky window ceilings to relax patients during mammograms and invasive procedures like biopsies. Sally Ball, Assistant Director of Medical Imaging and Head Mammographer at PAH, says the suite offers “dignity and respect” during an otherwise vulnerable experience.

As a breast cancer survivor, Ball understands the anxiety patients face. “Being able to offer a space that puts the patient at ease will relax the patient and result in better quality images,” she said.

PAH is also the first Australian hospital with GE Healthcare’s Senographe Pristina integrated 3D mammography system. The technology improves lesion visualisation without increasing radiation exposure. A new Dueta compression device allows patients to control their own compression for added comfort.

Ball said giving patients control over small things like compression “can make a big difference.” With over 2000 mammograms performed annually at PAH, the new technology aims to transform the standard of care.

According to Ball, “When you are diagnosed with breast cancer, you lose control of so many aspects of your life…Giving back control of even the smallest of things, like compression on a mammogram, can make a big difference to a patient.”

Amit Yadav, Chief Executive Officer of GE Healthcare Australia & New Zealand, said the hospital is leading the nation in adopting this innovative approach to breast imaging. The CEM and CEM biopsy capabilities of the Senographe Pristina system mark an exciting advancement in mammography at PAH.

By integrating contrast enhancement into 3D mammography, radiologists can better detect and characterise suspicious areas in the breast. This leads to more accurate diagnoses and improved patient outcomes.

Veloway 1 Upgrade Expected to be Completed Before 2023 Ends

The O’Keefe Street Velobridge project has reached a major milestone, as part of the wider Veloway 1 upgrade which is scheduled for completion before 2023 ends.

Steel truss bridge installation planned

In October, construction works commenced for the installation and completion of a steel truss bridge over O’Keefe Street in Woolloongabba. The structure is a key component of the Velobridge, which will provide a new dedicated crossing for cyclists and other active transport users along the Veloway 1 route.

Through the bridge, “…V1 users will be able safely and efficiently continue their journey north or south without having to cross at Carl Street,” Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said.

The O’Keefe Street Velobridge is part of the larger Veloway 1 upgrade, a dedicated cycleway between South Brisbane and Underwood. More than 1,800 weekday cyclists who utilize the route will benefit from this project.

“With the … installation of the steel truss bridge, we can really begin to visualise this valuable new connection for the V1,” Minister Bailey stated.

Construction on the $22.03-million project commenced in late 2022. Completion is expected in late 2023, subject to external conditions.

82 New Affordable Homes in Stones Corner Begin Construction

Stones Corner is set to witness the construction of 82 new social and affordable homes that will cater to low-income essential workers in the area.

The construction crews and heavy machinery have commenced work on this vital project, which is aimed at addressing a pressing need. The development will comprise 46 one-bedroom units, nine two-bedroom units, and the remainder as studio apartments, providing a range of housing options for the community.

The Stones Corner development marks the fifth project announced under a partnership between the Brisbane Housing Company (BHC) and QIC, all funded through the Palaszczuk Government’s signature $2 billion Housing Investment Fund.

So far, the HIF has approved over $479 million in project funding, with 1,600 homes in the pipeline, and an additional 71 proposals shortlisted for future assessment. In total, this initiative will contribute to the construction of more than 5,600 new social and affordable homes over the next five years.

Enhancing Local Communities

Construction is anticipated to span the next 18 months, creating opportunities for local workers and supporting the community’s growth. Minister for Housing Meaghan Scanlon highlighted the importance of institutional investors and super funds in the housing sector.

“Places like these will become homes for local workers, families escaping domestic violence, young people looking to get a good job or education, and a place for many people with a disability to live independently,” Ms Scanlon stated.

The Member for Greenslopes, Joe Kelly, praised the density of the development and its alignment with the surrounding neighbourhood. He noted the convenient location near public transport options like the Stones Corner busway station and the Buranda train station, schools, shops, and essential services, ensuring residents can connect with the services and supports they need.

“We know that our inner-city suburbs are growing, and that we need to provide more social and affordable homes to accommodate this growth,” Mr Kelly said.

Changing Lives with Quality Housing

Rebecca Oelkers, the Chief Executive Officer of the Brisbane Housing Company, expressed her enthusiasm for the project.

“Every single one of these new social and affordable homes will change the life of someone in housing need in Brisbane,” she said. “We are thrilled to get this inner-city development underway – we know that providing high quality, safe and affordable housing across our communities has never been more important. We look forward to contributing to the thriving and diverse community here in Stones Corner and to welcoming our new residents home as soon as possible.”

With the commencement of this project, Stones Corner takes a step closer to addressing the housing challenges faced by its residents, while also contributing to the broader vision of the Housing Investment Fund to make affordable housing accessible to those in need.
