New Mammography Technology Transforms Patient Experience at Princess Alexandra Hospital

Princess Alexandra Hospital recently unveiled new state-of-the-art mammography technology, including Australia’s first sensory suite, to enhance the patient experience and improve breast imaging.

Read: Veloway 1 Upgrade Expected to be Completed Before 2023 Ends

The sensory suite utilises mood lighting, lavender scented walls, and sky window ceilings to relax patients during mammograms and invasive procedures like biopsies. Sally Ball, Assistant Director of Medical Imaging and Head Mammographer at PAH, says the suite offers “dignity and respect” during an otherwise vulnerable experience.

As a breast cancer survivor, Ball understands the anxiety patients face. “Being able to offer a space that puts the patient at ease will relax the patient and result in better quality images,” she said.

PAH is also the first Australian hospital with GE Healthcare’s Senographe Pristina integrated 3D mammography system. The technology improves lesion visualisation without increasing radiation exposure. A new Dueta compression device allows patients to control their own compression for added comfort.

Ball said giving patients control over small things like compression “can make a big difference.” With over 2000 mammograms performed annually at PAH, the new technology aims to transform the standard of care.

According to Ball, “When you are diagnosed with breast cancer, you lose control of so many aspects of your life…Giving back control of even the smallest of things, like compression on a mammogram, can make a big difference to a patient.”

Amit Yadav, Chief Executive Officer of GE Healthcare Australia & New Zealand, said the hospital is leading the nation in adopting this innovative approach to breast imaging. The CEM and CEM biopsy capabilities of the Senographe Pristina system mark an exciting advancement in mammography at PAH.

By integrating contrast enhancement into 3D mammography, radiologists can better detect and characterise suspicious areas in the breast. This leads to more accurate diagnoses and improved patient outcomes.

Veloway 1 Upgrade Expected to be Completed Before 2023 Ends

The O’Keefe Street Velobridge project has reached a major milestone, as part of the wider Veloway 1 upgrade which is scheduled for completion before 2023 ends.

Steel truss bridge installation planned

In October, construction works commenced for the installation and completion of a steel truss bridge over O’Keefe Street in Woolloongabba. The structure is a key component of the Velobridge, which will provide a new dedicated crossing for cyclists and other active transport users along the Veloway 1 route.

Through the bridge, “…V1 users will be able safely and efficiently continue their journey north or south without having to cross at Carl Street,” Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said.

The O’Keefe Street Velobridge is part of the larger Veloway 1 upgrade, a dedicated cycleway between South Brisbane and Underwood. More than 1,800 weekday cyclists who utilize the route will benefit from this project.

“With the … installation of the steel truss bridge, we can really begin to visualise this valuable new connection for the V1,” Minister Bailey stated.

Construction on the $22.03-million project commenced in late 2022. Completion is expected in late 2023, subject to external conditions.

82 New Affordable Homes in Stones Corner Begin Construction

Stones Corner is set to witness the construction of 82 new social and affordable homes that will cater to low-income essential workers in the area.

The construction crews and heavy machinery have commenced work on this vital project, which is aimed at addressing a pressing need. The development will comprise 46 one-bedroom units, nine two-bedroom units, and the remainder as studio apartments, providing a range of housing options for the community.

The Stones Corner development marks the fifth project announced under a partnership between the Brisbane Housing Company (BHC) and QIC, all funded through the Palaszczuk Government’s signature $2 billion Housing Investment Fund.

So far, the HIF has approved over $479 million in project funding, with 1,600 homes in the pipeline, and an additional 71 proposals shortlisted for future assessment. In total, this initiative will contribute to the construction of more than 5,600 new social and affordable homes over the next five years.

Enhancing Local Communities

Construction is anticipated to span the next 18 months, creating opportunities for local workers and supporting the community’s growth. Minister for Housing Meaghan Scanlon highlighted the importance of institutional investors and super funds in the housing sector.

“Places like these will become homes for local workers, families escaping domestic violence, young people looking to get a good job or education, and a place for many people with a disability to live independently,” Ms Scanlon stated.

The Member for Greenslopes, Joe Kelly, praised the density of the development and its alignment with the surrounding neighbourhood. He noted the convenient location near public transport options like the Stones Corner busway station and the Buranda train station, schools, shops, and essential services, ensuring residents can connect with the services and supports they need.

“We know that our inner-city suburbs are growing, and that we need to provide more social and affordable homes to accommodate this growth,” Mr Kelly said.

Changing Lives with Quality Housing

Rebecca Oelkers, the Chief Executive Officer of the Brisbane Housing Company, expressed her enthusiasm for the project.

“Every single one of these new social and affordable homes will change the life of someone in housing need in Brisbane,” she said. “We are thrilled to get this inner-city development underway – we know that providing high quality, safe and affordable housing across our communities has never been more important. We look forward to contributing to the thriving and diverse community here in Stones Corner and to welcoming our new residents home as soon as possible.”

With the commencement of this project, Stones Corner takes a step closer to addressing the housing challenges faced by its residents, while also contributing to the broader vision of the Housing Investment Fund to make affordable housing accessible to those in need.

Tender Open for Greenslopes Bowls Club Lease

The old Greenslopes Bowls Club facility is up for a new community lease after the previous tenant had to surrender their lease.

Cr Fiona Cunningham said the Brisbane City Council has opened up a tender process looking for interested community organisations to take over operations at the site. Eligible groups need to apply through the council, and applications will be evaluated based on factors like community benefit and involvement of local organisations.

“I think we can all agree that while it’s disappointing to see the former tenants having to surrender the lease, a new chapter for our community is waiting to be written,” said Cr Cunningham.

The length of the new lease will depend on the plans and community contributions proposed by the successful applicant.

Cr Cunningham said residents with questions about the process can email her at Coorparoo.ward@bcc.Qld.gov.au to get accurate information.

The tender comes as the council looks to make the most of community facilities across Brisbane. The Greenslopes site presents a chance to bring new services, activities and energy to the neighbourhood.

Buranda Station Accessibility Upgrade Takes Steps Toward Inclusive Rail Travel

Early works have commenced on a multimillion-dollar accessibility upgrade project at the Buranda train station, part of a broader plan that includes improvements at Morningside, Lindum, and Banyo stations, all of which are expected to temporarily close in January 2024, once construction is in full swing.

The Buranda station accessibility upgrade is part of a broader plan that includes improvements at Lindum, Morningside, and Banyo train stations. While these upgrades are set to enhance the overall rail network, the improvements at Buranda station, situated in the suburb of Woolloongabba, are generating considerable anticipation.

Early construction activities have begun at the four stations. Enabling works are underway at Lindum and Buranda stations. Site establishment will commence in the coming months.

Geotechnical activities and overhead line and service location works have already been carried out at Morningside station. Piling, signalling construction and site establishment will commence soon.

The project, part of the State’s Big Build initiative, aims to make rail travel more inclusive and convenient for all passengers.

Plans for Buranda Station’s Upgrade

The Buranda station will undergo a complete transformation, with an estimated cost of $70 million allocated towards the upgrade.

This investment will bring several significant improvements to the station, including a new footbridge with lift access, platform re-alignment, enhanced service and facilities, such as increased shelter coverage and customer information screens.

One of the central goals of the upgrade is to reduce the gap between the platform and train doors, making boarding safer and easier for all passengers.

This includes individuals in wheelchairs, those with walking frames, parents with prams, and passengers carrying luggage. Access to the station overpass via a lift will further improve accessibility.

Other enhancements encompass updated customer facilities, including accessible toilets, disability-compliant ticket windows, improved seating, and extended platform shelters.

To create a safer environment, the station will also feature hearing augmentation loops, tactile floor indicators, new wayfinding signage, information screens, and upgraded security through CCTV and lighting.

Temporary Closure – Buranda Station

However, it is essential to note that to expedite these vital upgrades, the station will temporarily close during construction. This closure, along with those at Lindum, Morningside, and Banyo stations, is scheduled to begin in January 2024. During this period, alternative transport options will be available to assist commuters.

Buranda station is expected to welcome passengers in mid-2025. Commuters at Lindum, Morningside, and Banyo stations can anticipate the reopening of their stations in the second half of 2024, subject to construction progress and weather conditions.

Queensland Rail is keen to engage with its customers to ensure that alternative travel arrangements align with their needs and preferences. To gather valuable input, Queensland Rail has launched a survey, seeking feedback on passengers’ travel patterns and requirements during the station closures.

“The Buranda station accessibility upgrade project is a significant milestone that will make a real difference in our community. These improvements will ensure that our rail network is accessible to everyone,” Member for Greenslopes Joe Kelly said.
