Upgraded Langlands Park Memorial Pool Officially Opens

The refurbished Langlands Park Memorial Pool at Panitya Street in Stones Corner has been officially reopened in time for summer.

Construction works for the Langlands Park Memorial Pool upgrade, which commenced mid-August 2018, has finally been completed. Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner graced the event marking the official opening of the complex on 7 December 2019, as families were treated with loads of free food, entertainment, and family-friendly activities.

There is a fully accessible site with ramps into the 50-metre and 25-metre pool, as well as accessible change room facilities. All amenities were upgraded and new landscaping completed the $8-million upgrade work throughout the complex.

There has been a 46-percent increase in pools patronage over the past four years, Brisbane City Council reported, with the average number of visitors increasing each year.

  • 2015/16 – 2.1 million
  • 2016/17 – 2.5 million
  • 2017/18 – 3.1 million

“More than 3.2 million residents visited Council pools in the past financial year and we have been pleased to see that people continue to love these centres, as patronage has increased year-on-year,” Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said.

“When speaking to residents across Brisbane, I often hear how people love to visit their local pools, as they continue to be a place to meet, connect and play.

“Brisbane has wonderful climate and a great outdoor lifestyle with 280 days of sunshine each year and Council pools are just one of the many ways that our residents and visitors can make the most of our enviable lifestyle.

“We have upgraded Council pools across Brisbane to allow even more residents to enjoy these fantastic offerings,” Cr Schinner said.

“These improvements will make sure the facility remains an enjoyable, modern and family-friendly destination now and into the future.

Greenslopes State School Joins Queensland Government’s Plastic Recycle Scheme

Students of Greenslopes State School are helping clean up the environment one container at a time and even earning whilst at it. This is by getting involved in the state government’s container refund scheme, Containers for Change.

Launched November 2018, the scheme offers a ten cent refund per item on any eligible container. Eligible containers can be made from glass, plastic, aluminium or liquid paper board and can range in size from 150ml to 3L.

When it started, around 30 state schools around Queensland already participated in the program. Participating schools trialled their ways to collect containers within their school communities and work to harness the energy of everyone associated with their school, including parents and carers, students and teachers.

For Queenslanders who prefer to donate their drink container to a community group, sports club or another organisation, container return points can direct the 10c refund payment to a registered group.

In Greenslopes, the state school happens to be the registered group. Those who want to donate to Greenslopes State School’s Parents and Citizens Association, you may use the code C10028875 which is the school’s unique Scheme ID. The P&C association will receive funds to spend back on the school.

About Containers for Change

Containers for Change is a state-wide container refund scheme that aims to reduce the amount of drink containers that are littered and increase Queensland’s recycling rate.

Not-for-profit group Container Exchange (CoEx) was appointed by the government as the Product Responsibility Organisation (PRO), to develop and run the container refund scheme in Queensland.

For further information about Containers for Change, visit their website or the Queensland Government’s website.

Gold Coast’s Famous Village Market Returns to Stones Corner

Did you know that Gold Coast’s favourite outdoor shopping mecca, The Village Markets, has been seasonally trading in Brisbane? If you haven’t been there, here’s your chance to experience what it’s like as it makes a comeback at Stones Corner Village in Greenslopes.

Happening on Sunday, the 29th of Sept 2019, The Village Markets in Logan Road will open from 9:00 a.m to 2:00 p.m. This is the fourth time this event would be mounted in Greenslopes since its Brisbane debut in December 2018.

By now, Gold Coast shoppers know the drill when it comes to The Village Markets since it opened more than 10 years ago in Burleigh Heads. Whilst Brissy folks used to travel more than two hours to the south to score some fashionable vintage finds and pre-loved designer labels, the quarterly event in Greenslopes has become a convenient detour.

The lineup of shops at The Village Market is a gold mine for shopaholics, fashionistas and designers. Apart from the clothes, shoppers may also snag well-crafted handcrafted pieces, ingenious upcycled furniture and unique homewares.

Council Seeks Feedback for Stephens Mountain Reserve Concept Plan Draft

Brisbane City Council is inviting the local community to share their thoughts about the development of the draft concept plan for the Stephens Mountain Reserve in Greenslopes.

To help get the community’s thoughts about the mountain reserve development, Council is asking residents to fill out a short survey. The survey asks about the use of the reserve, types and frequency of activities, and if there are elements locals would like to be enhanced in the future.

In an effort to continue protecting the reserve whilst making it accessible for the local community to enjoy, BCC has allocated $200,000 to construct a lookout and walking trails at Stephens Mountain.

The survey for Stephens Mountain Reserve draft concept plan closes on Sunday 22 September 2019 and is available at https://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/5190464/FuturePI

Fore more information, phone Council on 07 3403 8888.

About Stephens Mountain Reserve

Under the recently adopted Coorparoo and Districts Neighbourhood Plan, around 5.8 hectares of Stephens Mountain will be a conservation zone. The reserve is a local landmark and considered one of Brisbane’s highest points.

This means the ecological, landscape and visual values of Stephens Mountain will be retained and that remnant vegetation on the area will be protected. Based on the amended neighbourhood plan, developments for consideration should also respect the natural topography and should complement the scenic landscape.

Proposed Retail Centre Next to Boggo Road Gaol Attracts Strong Opposition

A new mixed-use commercial and retail centre next to Boggo Road Gaol could rise, should a development application by Stockwell Development Group be approved. However, this DA is attracting some strong opposition from people in the neighbourhood barely a month since it was lodged.

The proposal calls for two-storey buildings consisting of retail space at the ground level and commercial space at the first level. It will provide a total of 163 car parking spaces and 12 bicycle spaces.

Detailed plan (Photo Credit: pdonline.brisbane.qld.gov.au)

Located at 21 Boggo Road and 41 Boggo Road in Dutton Park, “Boggo Road Boulevard” will only be 150 metres away from  the proposed Boggo Road Cross River Rail station. There will be two access locations via Boggo Road and another one via Peter Doherty Street.

Reasons for Opposition

Locals living within the vicinity are raising their concerns to the proposed development. The number one concern of residents is the amount of car parking spaces proposed in the area, which is already suffering heavy congestion.

A resident argued that the over-provision of car parking spaces and lack of priority for public and active transport mean this DA should not be approved in its current form.

Some residents raised the issue of the development’s proximity to the heritage-listed Boggo Road Gaol, an Australian prison located on Annerley Road in Dutton Park. Designs prepared by Buchan shows the buildings will have access and views to Boggo Road Gaol.

“Given this is a heritage listed area and contains critical elements of our past, I can’t believe the consideration to develop comes to mind,” one resident said, highlighting that it will weaken the heritage value of the gaol.

Boggo Road Gaol (Photo Credit: Kgbo/Wikimedia Commons)

The 1976 and 1987/88 tower and detention units adjoining the eastern side of the Boggo Road Gaol will need to be demolished to facilitate the development. Although the detention units need to be removed, the developer insists that no other part of the Boggo Road Gaol is proposed to be demolished or impacted by the proposed development.

Other issues raised include its non-maintenance to the pedestrian and bicycle movement through the corridor between the Eco-Sciences building and the Gaol as well as use of public space.

For further information about the proposed mixed-use commercial and retail centre in Dutton Park, see Full DA – A005260979.
